Made in the UK - our British made bags challenging the status quo
Share
Is it really possible to manufacture a bag entirely in the UK?
This question is constantly on our minds. We’re doing our best to prove that yes, UK businesses can source their manufacturing and production in the UK, and succeed at it. But why is British manufacture so important to our bag brand?
Here are five reasons:
1. British manufacturers can produce in smaller quantities.
When ordering from overseas manufacturers, there can be a pretty large minimum order quantity. This isn’t as often the case in the UK, which is much better for small businesses like us. It’s also better from a sustainability point of view - we’ll only order what we need.
2. Better consistency and craftsmanship.
Many British manufacturers and factories have a long legacy, like Bowmer Bonds who supply our webbing, or our waxed canvas from British Millerain. They’ve been doing one thing well for a really long time, so quality is guaranteed.
3. It’s more ethical and sustainable.
Our materials don’t need to travel long distances to get to our makers - sometimes the production facilities are just down the road! This drastically reduces our impact on the environment compared to manufacturing overseas. It also means we know exactly where our materials come from, and how they’re made, allowing us to avoid any unethical practices.
The absolute majority of apparel brands outsource their manufacturing, but we want to show that this doesn’t have to be the norm.
4. We still have one of the biggest manufacturing economies in the world.
From the outside, it might look like our manufacturing industry is in decline, but this isn’t necessarily the case. The UK is still a world leader in many sectors, including the textile industry. As a British bag brand, why wouldn’t we take advantage of the amazing fabrics available literally on our doorstep?
5. We can support other British makers and manufacturers.
We think production should be more circular and more people-focused. Producing our bags in the UK means we can properly get to know the people who make our bags, and develop lasting and meaningful relationships with them and our suppliers. It also means that your money and our profits are reinvested into the local and wider British economy. Win-win!
