This bag is almost plastic-free (we use a recycled polyester thread)
Offsetting
7 trees planted + 20kg CO2e offset
BearReMade
Our bags are made to last a lifetime, but we get that not everyone wants to keep something that long.
To avoid your bag ending up in the back of the closet, or worse, the bin, we will take your bag back in exchange for BearMade credit (10% of the bags original value).
We will then recycle the parts from that bag and make it into something new.

faq's
What can I fit in this bag?
This is a hard question to answer as so many things are different shapes and sizes. However, for city use we typically take a 16" or 14" laptop and/or tablet, a large pair of headphones, a magazine, a book/notebook a jumper, a jacket and a bottle of water (the bottle pockets on this bag will fit a 1L Nalgene bottle). There's also enough space for your gym kit or a full change of clothes if you cycle to work.
For outdoor use we would typically take a jacket, a jumper, a water bottle, a small first aid kit, some snacks, a small stove, kettle and mugs.
In both these scenarios we would still have plenty of space left in the bag.
We also regularly use this bag for long weekends away.
Are your bags waterproof?
Our bags are not totally waterproof, very few are. But they are pretty damn close. We spent an hour throwing them around in a waterfall and water only got in when we forgot to roll the top down....
This bag is being used all over the world, in all kinds of conditions, and it's taking it all in its stride.
Can I customise this bag?
Sometimes we can, sometimes we can't. It depends on the product. If you want to know more, send us an email and let us know what product you would like to personalise, along with what sort of personalisation you would like.
Do you really only make 25 bags a week?
We sure do! 25 bags is our maximum capacity and we have no interest in making more than that. It means we can take great care over every detail in all stages of production.
Think 25 bags sounds like a lot? It's not. Rolls Royce actually make over 60 cars per week.
made by Amy
We insist on working with great people who share our values, and our lead bag maker Amy is one of a kind.
With 20+ years of experience, she makes all our bags, with the help of a small team, from her studio in the Suffolk countryside.
material highlights
Our bags are made from GOTS certified organic dry-waxed cotton canvas from British Millerain in Lancashire. They have been dyeing and proofing cotton for over 100 years and this material is one of their latest creations. It has a totally dry finish (dry-waxed doesn't always mean totally), is waterproof, PFC free, and is machine washable! However, we don't recommend you wash it often.
the AustriAlpin Cobra buckle
The AustriAlpin Cobra buckle. Normally used on climbing equipment to save lives, this buckle can take the weight of a small elephant. Yes, it's overkill for a bag, but when you hear the sound it makes you will understand why we chose it.
notes from the designer
This bag was designed with the help of one of our customers. He wanted a bag that would be perfect for commuting or short trips away. He loved our Gouthwaite but wanted something a bit bigger, with more organisation and the option to carry the bag by hand. So after a couple of months, more than 40 emails, and a number of zoom calls, we had a bag. A pretty awesome one.
We were able to add all the new features and maintain the clean look and core design of our best-selling Gouthwaite backpack.
We loved it, our customer loved it, and everyone we showed it to loved it as well. So it didn’t take long for us to decide that we should put the bag into production.
our impact
We feel personally responsible for the things we put out into the world and believe business should be a force for good.
to keep our impact low we:
→ Only make 25 bags a week
→ Will repair your bag for life
→ Will recycle your bag at the end of its life
→ Carbon offset all that we make and do. We plant trees locally (we actually plant
them) and in places where they will have a big impact with the help of Ecologi.

We've been featured in some of the worlds best publications and have awesome customers who leave us reviews like the ones below.
I've owned far too many bags and packs over the years and very rarely write reviews, but the Jorvik backpack absolutely deserves one. I’ve had mine for a couple of months and used it for commuting, weekend trips and a bit of light hiking. It’s a quality item: well designed, made with great pride, and built from exceptional materials. The canvas is wonderfully rugged, is definitely waterproof, and looks fantastic in the black I bought. The straps are very comfortable even with a heavy load and the pack is a great size, with enough room for a winter long weekend if you travel light. Despite its size the pack keeps a low profile, which I really like as it looks great. The buckle lives up to the hype, working brilliantly even wearing gloves, and the internal and external pockets are cleverly located and well sized. The back padding is very comfortable, forms nicely to your back, and breathes better than synthetic alternatives.
I spent literally months deciding whether to buy this backpack and I‘m so pleased I finally did. It’s now a faithful companion and its quality means it will undoubtedly remain a so for many years to come. Worth every penny.
Very durable old school backpack. I use mine daily and its an extremely high quality product. A wonderful company and received my backpack with a lovely handwritten thank you note. I recommend this company highly.
If you are looking for a bag that is homegrown, of extremely high quality and construction that will take you back to backpacks of yester year then you would do well to choose the Jorvik bag by Bearmade.
Size wise the Jorvik is perfect for a days trip or hike and for a weekend away with a capacity of 25 to 30 litres. It dosnt have a number of unnecessary pockets but what it does have are well thought out and executed and perfectly sufficient. I have not been caught out in the rain just yet with the bag, but I have every faith in the waxed cotton from which the Jorvik is constructed to keep your contents safe from the elements.
They have made use of the highly regarded Cobra brand buckles on the bag which aside from being pretty bomb proof adds to the retro appeal of the Jorvik.
I did a fair bit of research on bags before settling on this one. I am a sucker for retro stuff.....I carry my Photography gear in Billingham bags...another English company who makes highly appealing old fashioned looking camera bags.....so I knew the overall look I was after and the Bearmade Jorvik fitted the bill perfectly.
It's the sort of bag that harks bag to something used by Enid Blytons Famous Five when they are out on an adventure or a picnic with Boiled Eggs and Lashings of Ginger Beer.
It's not a particularly technical bag...but then that is not what I wanted either. The webbing shoulder straps, although lacking any form of padding are extremely comfortable to wear and the bag feels nicely balanced on my back.
All in all I am very, very happy with my choice. I chose the Rust colour which is very pleasant and adds further still to the retro look and feel of the bag.
Bearmade are only a small British based company and have limited capacity to make large numbers of bags. But that means that every bag they do make is made with love and care and an attention to detail which has to be seen to be believed...and that is a really good thing.
By the appearance and feel of it, my Jorvik bag will probably out live me....and I look forward to many an enjoyable trip together over the coming months and years.
If you are a person who appreciates high quality and a product that is made in Britain ...with a huge dollop of nostalgia, then Bearmade bags.... and in this instance the Jorvik......have to be at the very top of your list if you are in the market for a new Bag.
Not inexpensive by any means...but if you can afford one then don't hesitate!
Finding someone whose values align so well is always a challenge, especially in this time of greenwashing. The bag looks great but the shared values were more important. So I ordered because I felt I need to put my money where my heart is. When my Jorvik arrived it was love at first sight. The bag is beautifully crafted and the small details point to the amount of thought and care put into in. I love the Colour, I still giggle every time a hear the buckles satisfying clasping sound and the inside is well planned so I don’t lose my stuff. I feel we will go on many beautiful adventures.
My jorvik was made by Raymond and not Amy, makes no difference the quality is still superb as is the pack. I have a Gouthwaite 18-23l which i love but i really appreciate the larger size, bigger bottle pockets and extra pockets you get with the Jorvik, and i love supporting Bearmade.
It is a bit spendy but if you look around you can find Far Eastern made packs that are not far off in price and i know who i would rather spend my money with.
Merry Christmas.
